There is, however, a number of other individuals who have the choice to leave at the time or later. The strategy of letting the computer decide and making that decision final was not appropriate and not considerate of the interest and voice of the passengers. This is because unlike a human being, the computer could not have considered the emergency level of the situation that the individuals it picked had. Dr. David Dao, for example, explained that the reason why he was extremely serious about being on board of the place was that he inten ded to see certain patients when he managed to get back. This aspect made him an inappropriate choice to leave the flight. If, however, the manager used a strategy where the individuals whom the computer choose were called aside or in a chamber that is away from the rest of the passengers and then provided with the situation that the flight had and the need to help by boarding another plane at a later date, the manager could have attained an opportunity to convince the passengers to accept leaving the place in a peaceful manner, and at the same time he or she would have managed to understand the urgency of the issue at hand. With this information, it would have been easier to obtain a peaceful and appropriate decision on the individuals that would be cleared to leave the plane and the allowances that they would get for making that decision (Gregory, 2004). Benefits and positive aspect of the recommended action The two courses of action that are recommended which theairline management could have utilized to handle the issue are significantly beneficial, compared to the decisions that the organization is currently utilizing. To begin with, the decision of adding the allowance which the organization was offering to the customers could have eventually achieved results after reaching a certain level, where individuals who did not have urgent matters to attend to, could have volunteered to get the money and the allowances offered. This aspect could have been beneficial for all the individuals involved and could also have helped the individuals manage to remain completely effective and capable of being appropriately able (Deuschl, 2006). The decision to call and listen to the case of every individual that was chosen to leave the flight and convince these individuals to leave the plane peacefully and wilfully is the other important aspect that could have helped to solve the issue at hand completely. To begin with, the incident occurred because one of the chosen individuals had an emergency to attend to, an aspect that brought about the need to leave with the flight without having any delays. Since the manager who boarded the place claimed that computers were used to pick the passengers who would give space to the flight attendants, it is clear that no specific procedure was utilized to enhance the needed and provided effectiveness. With this regard, therefore, the problem raised because the manager did not take time to listen to the needs of the chooses passenger and address the issue. He or she simply decided to use force to remove the resisting passenger from the seat and continue with the flight. This decision is s imply the major problem that the organization involved in, which caused the incidence to lead to the significant problems like it did (Green, 2010). Conclusions It is clear that the involvement of the organization in handling this situation was completely flawed. The major mistake which led to the occurrence of this incidence and the significant tarnishing of the united airline's organization image is the problem of being less capable and effective in operating appropriately. The organization failed in utilizing public relation based strategy in addressing the issue and thus it eventually caused the major problems of significant tarnishing of its image. To handle the situation in a better way, the organization could have avoided the dramatic use of force to remove the passenger from his seat when other passengers were watching. It could have utilized other effective strategies like the dialogue with the passenger and convincing as recommended. The implementation of the two recommendations could have helped the organization manage top avoid the large problems it is currently facing due to the occurrence of this incidence (Ali, 2002). Democratic Outlaws DEMOCRATIC OUTLAWS ? Pirates, the outlaws of the sea. If like me, the first idea that comes to mind regarding pirates is a group of raiding and plundering individuals. This is due to todays society glamorizing the pirates as fascinating characters. Historically, not much written information has been left behind. The pirates did not leave ship logs or accounts of plunders, because it could be used to incriminate them. Society today has invented the pirates to fit a romantic mold. Therefore, we grew up thinking of treasure hunts, sea battles, sword fights and plank walkers, when in actuality the pirates of old were loathed by society. During the Golden Age of Piracy, during the 17th and 18th centuries, pirates were regarded as common criminals of the seas without thought to democracy/justice or civility. In short, the pirates had no decency. However, is there some truth to the glamorized legends? Could the legendary characters have upheld the same ideals? In the course of the semester, we have learned some of the truths behind the glamorized pirate facade. Throughout life I have seen that good is more often than not overshadowed by bad. I decided to give these characters the benefit of the doubt and do some investigating. In this essay, I will attempt to prove that human decency among the pirates could have existed. Civility is one trait rarely associated with pirates. Why should civility be associated as a trait of pirates? After all, pirates raid, plunder, steal, rape, drink and swear. Civilized people do not participate in lowly, unlawful behavior. Pirates were know to be excessive drunks, ruthless killers, indulgers of women and unruly individuals. In defense of pirate civility, I must point out a few examples. Lord Byrons The Corsair is an excellent example of pirate decency. Conrad, Byrons hero and captain of a pirate crew, shows remarkable civility for a pirate. While The Corsair is a fictional work, many of the pirate tales, as in other fictional works, derive from actual occurrences. While Conrads crew is toasting spirts and carousing about, he remains composed. Neer for his lip the purplng cup they fill, That goblet passes him untasted still . . . But while he shuns the grosser joys of sense, His mind seems nourished by that abstinence (Byron 152). Conrad does not overindulge and does not become unruly. Lafitte was a pirate masked in gentlemans clothing. It is said, Lafitte hobb-knobbed with high society. The majority of the descriptions of Lafitte portray him as well dressed, well mannered and well spoken, as a gentleman should be. Lafitte was also a patriot playing a significant role in the Battle of New Orleans, in which he received honors. Democracy/Justice among the pirates is another unlikely topic to ponder when thinking of pirates. How can outlaws be democratic or just? The pirates bluntly disregarded the law when raiding and plundering. However, within the pirate community, was a democratic structure. The community had its own way of government and enforcing justice. Life amongst the pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries was more democratic than those of most countries. Although the captain is an elected position, the captain of the vessel was in complete control and was to be obeyed and respected. The quartermaster is the chief authority save in battle. He acts as ships magistrate for small offenses. Serious offenses are tried before a pirate jury. Both began to increase in speed as my eyes narrowed in on the time. My sophomore year had begun and I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to do track this year. Last year I played football in the fall and soccer in the spring. Not really enjoying it, the decision was made to play " real futbol" (soccer) in the fall, leaving the spring sports season open. My friend kept telling me how fun track was, so I decided to give it a try. As the first meet neared, things were going well. I made it onto the 4x100 team making me the third fastest kid on the team. The other members of the relay were Jason Schmidt, Jeremy Willard and Rodney Schmidt. Jason and Jeremy were both the top dogs and Rodney and I were second from the bottom of the barrel. The 400 relay was my best event. We placed in every meet and even took home some medals as the season progressed. As the track year rounded for the home stretch, we had only three more meets to compete in: the Tiger Invitational, regionals, and state. As the Tiger rolled around, there arose a question of whether or not to keep the team together or break it up and give the two seniors a chance to compete in other individual events at regionals. I actually didn't know about this possibility until about five minutes before the race began on Saturday. We were all huddled together preparing for the start. Jeremy came up to Rodney and me and told us that if we didn't do well the team might be dropped. Kicking our motivational drive into high, the four of us focused on only one thing: running the time we all knew we could. Getting into the blocks I felt more ready than ever. At the sound of the gun, I shot out of the blocks. I sprinted around the track, concentrating on making a great hand-off.

There are many different perspectives and theories regarding homosexuality. There are historical, culture, species, scientific, and psychological perspectives on being a homosexual person but which is true and which is simply a theory. Homosexual Perspectives Historically being a gay man or a lesbian was a sin. According to the reading sodomy is a sin and was most likely the reason why Sodom was destroyed all those years ago. Historically any release of sperm not meant for procreation is a sin. However, in ancient Greece it was common for established men to form sexual relationships with young men about the age of growing a beard. There are pictures on vases that depict a man inserting his penis between a boy’s legs but not in the anus. I think that given the historical views of homosexual behaviors it makes some people think that it is still wrong and should still be hidden from people. It also depends on how a person was raised in my opinion. If a person was raised to believe that it is a sin to enter into homosexual relationships then they will try to hide it from everyone for as long as possible. However, if a person was raised to believe that there is nothing wrong with being homosexual then they will be more likely to be open about it. (Rathus, 2011) A study was done in 76 preliterate countries as to if male-male relationships were considered to be acceptable. In 49 of these countries it was considered to be normal and acceptable for male-male relationships. However, the other 27 countries had sanctions if you were caught in male-male relationships. Another study was done years later that was of 70 of the world’s non-European societies and the prevalence of male-male relationships. 41% of the 70 found that male-male sexual relationships were present but uncommon. The other 59% claimed that it was rare or absent in their societies. In some countries  li ke New Guinea it is considered a rite of passage for boys between the ages of 7 and 10 to leave their homes and move into a â€Å"clubhouse† with adolescent boys and adult males. While living there they would fellate the older boys and drink their semen. They are encouraged to drink as much semen as possible to give them a rise in puberty. However, in their late teens early 20s they are expected to take a bride and enter in exclusively into male-female relationships. I think that homosexuals would be more open about their homosexuality depending on if it is accepted in the society that they live in. There are many reasons as to why people hide that they are homosexual from those around them but I think that the most common reason is that they feel that they will not be accepted by others if they tell. (Rathus, 2011) In the animal kingdom it is not uncommon for there to be male-male or female-female sexual relationships. However, in male-male relationships in the animal kingdom it is usually an act of dominance not pleasure. This is very similar to the behaviors of male and female inmates or those with limited access to the opposite gender. In prison there is a dominant and submissive person involved in these male-male and female-female sexual relationships. (Rathus, 2011) Coming Out and Adjusting When a gay male or a lesbian announces that they are a gay male or lesbian it is commonly referred to as coming out. I think that depending on the person and the society that they live in it is easy to come out. If you live in a society that accepts it even if they do not approve of it then it is easier to come out to people. It also depends on the support that a person has around them. If a person has a good support system than they will have an easier time coming out. However, if they feel that they will be scorned, mocked, harassed, or any other form of teasing then they will be less likely to come out. (Rathus, 2011) I think that the adjustment is the same for homosexuals as it is for heterosexuals. It is more of a lifestyle choice and therefore depending on how you live your life you will be happy. However, before a person comes out they may be very stressed, tense, overwhelmed, or any number of other feeling and emotions because they are hiding who they are from the world. Pers onal Beliefs I do not think that the historical or scientific reasons from the reading  have really shaped my sexual orientation. I think that religion might have a part in some people’s lives but me personally I think that a person should be judged for who they are not for their sexuality. Scientifically, I think that there is possibly a gene in the human body that causes you to be gay or lesbian but I do not think that I have that gene if it does exist. I think that I like who I like regardless of what other people think. Homosexuality is different for every person. There are people who are proud to be homosexual and there are people who are ashamed of being a homosexual. I think that this all depends on how a person is raised and what their beliefs are on the subject. No two people are exactly the same and this is true of homosexuals as well. What works for one person might not work for another person. Introduction Crime and its causes, have been studied the world over. In particular, there have been noted studies on the cost and benefit of crime, state of the economy and crime, and unemployment and wages and crime (Jones and Kutan). Some researchers have found relationships between unemployment and crime, while others have not. However, a more controversial issue is the explicit relationship between unemployment and crime. In other words, does unemployment cause crime or are there other causes (Papps and Winkelmann)? Specifically, does the average median income of a household, the individual poverty level, high school graduation rate, population, or the rate of divorce have influences on crime in the US? It has been observed that during the 1980s, the unemployment rate rose, as so did the crime rate, while in the 1990’s both declined (Gould, Mustard and Weinberg). If a contributory relationship is established, then development of incentives to avoid layoffs, sponsor work programs, and create unemployment relief programs should help to deter crime. The more job opportunities that are available to the able workforce, the less crime will be experienced in the community. Similarly, if a causal relationship is found between crime and other social and economic factors like divorce rate, median income, graduation rate, and poverty level, then ways to positively influence these factors should be developed and enacted in order to further deter crime in society. In Ehrlich’s model, individuals divide their time between legal activities and risky illegal activities. If legal income opportunities become scarce relative to potential gains from crime, the model predicts that crime will become more frequent. Increased unemployment, decreased graduation rate, increased divorce rate, and low income could be such factors. In studying past data as well as past research studies, there were some similarities in the findings, however in the analysis of the data there were also some contradictions. A simple theory from past studies showed that a decline in the wage offered is directly linked to an increase in the relative payoff of criminal activity; thus inducing workers to transition away from the legal sector towards the illegal sector. In addition, a lower wage offered may produce an income effect by increasing the need to seek additional sources of income in less desirable and more dangerous ways. The degree of legal alternatives affect criminal behavior, however, this varies by the type of crime. Some crimes such as robbery, larceny, burglary, and auto theft can be used for self enrichment; whereas, other crimes such as murder, rape, and assault are much less likely to bring about material gain to the offender. Offenders of the latter crimes are much more likely to be motivated by non-pecuniary considerations. It is important to note that only the most severe crimes are reported and when multiple crimes are committed in the same incident. With all variables held constant, it was still proven that a reduction in legal opportunities was directly influential in making one more likely to engage in any form of criminal activity regardless of motives, possibly due to the reduced legal earnings lost while engaging in a criminal career and potentially serving jail time. This overall trend represents a large long-term decline in the earning prospects of less educated males; although less educated workers suffered the most unemployment, unemployment rates generally follow a cyclical pattern that, by definition eventually traces out the business cycle. It is clear that the unemployment rate affects the labor market prospects of less educated men, but it is hard to discern long term deterioration in their legal opportunities by looking at the overall trend in the unemployment rate. The overall decline in the labor market prospects of less educated men is clearly shown by their wages. The data plainly shows that the propensity to commit crime moved inversely to the trends in the labor market conditions for unskilled men. These trends seems to be related, particularly since young unskilled men are the most likely to commit crime. The objective of this paper is to visit the issue of whether unemployment, graduation rate, divorce rate, poverty rate, population, and median income have causal effects on various categories of economic and anti-social crime. For this purpose, we analyze crime data from 44 US States and the District of Columbia. We estimate the relationship between several crime categories and the independent variables. The most important independent variables are: median income, unemployment rate, divorce rate, poverty rate, population, and graduation rate. The study of how graduation rate is related to crime is interesting because it could also be a factor in unemployment and median income. This could be due to fewer job opportunities as most skilled trades require at least a diploma. Unskilled laborers also tend to make less money and are more expendable and easily replaced. Similarly, unemployment could be a factor in poverty, while graduation and poverty could have a mutual influence on each other. Therefore, it is important to use all the social and economic factors outlined in the text to test the hypotheses discussed in the following section. Hypotheses In order to determine social and economic affects on crime we must test three main hypotheses. The first hypothesis states that a higher growth in employment leads to lower growth in the number of property crimes because it offers less incentive to potential criminals. The second hypothesis states that as household median income increases, more property crimes are committed because more goods are available in the community. The third hypothesis states that as the graduation rate decreases, incidences of violent crime increases, due to more outdoor activities, less job opportunities, and gang influences. The three hypotheses will be tested by using a regression analysis, which will be performed at a 95% confidence interval to determine if the hypothesis can be supported of not. A test for multicollinearity will also be performed. Methodology Regression analysis was used in testing the hypotheses outlined in this document. The reasoning for the use of regression analysis as the testing methodology is that attempts were made to draw a straight line relationship between the independent variables and dependent variables; that is, the desire was to show a linear relationship between two variables.

Is All Art Appropriate? Is All Art Appropriate? Should a Christian refrain from viewing, listening, or reading a piece of art because it is vulgar or offensive . . . no. If I had to pull one aspect out of the Christian faith that is the biggest thorn in my side it would be this very notion, the notion that Christians should abstain from anything that is even remotely distasteful. I believe that the idea of refraining from art that is possibly offensive makes one sheltered, and being sheltered breeds ignorance which in turn makes the Christian a less useful tool for the Lord to use. We are called to be a light in the darkness. How can we possibly be a light in the darkness if we are not aware of this darkness or unable to understand this darkness? Refraining from certain offensive pieces of art not only cripples us as tool for God it also stunts who one is as a person. Most movies or books that are what some might call distasteful are fashioned this way so that the point the creator wants to hammer home is all the more real. A good example of this is Schindler's List, a movie on the holocaust of World War II. This movie is rampant with violence, nudity, and language, yet each of these aspects is needed to portray the horror of what happened. We can learn something from every single piece of art ever made. Whether it is understanding how an evil works or understanding how one can be a better person, we become less ignorant and a more complete person. Equus was a very disturbing book, but this was the author's intention so that his points would be striking and powerful. I did not particularly enjoy reading the play, but as I finished the book I was convinced my ideas that a Christian should indeed be exposed to all art not just that which some might call ?appropriate? was indeed correct. Equus exposed and educated me on matters that will allow me to better understand others' problems as well as make me a more complete person. In particular I learned about the darkness that I am commanded to be a light in. One aspect of darkness that I was exposed to was immoral sexuality. Alan having sex with horses, Alan almost having sex with the Jill, and the Frank's pornography problems. Another aspect that I learned about was idolatry. I saw the terrible results of idolizing something. I also found the line where one should deem an object ?off limits?. This line can be drawn when a ?cultural artifact? becomes an object which causes ones mind to wander to immoral thoughts. This can be seen when the boy began to think sick thoughts about the horses. While I condone exposure to all art I am aware of the fact that some vulgar issues may pose as stumbling blocks to Christians. I think that discernment comes into play two fold here. If a Christian knows he has an issue with something he should avoid exposure to it. For example I would not recommend bringing the Frank to a movie that involved a lot of nudity. The second half of discernment is what we take away from what we have been exposed to. For example, in our reading of Equus we should not come away with a desire for sex or idolatry, but instead we should take away an understanding of the problem and the negative effects they
